Sound Seekers

Registered Charity No 1013870

Background
Sound Seekers, also known as the Commonwealth Society for the Deaf, supports deaf people, particularly children in developing countries of the Commonwealth.

Mission
To promote prevention of deafness, and relief, education and employment of the deaf people in the British Commonwealth.

Method of Operation

1. Provision of equipment and supplies (in addition to diagnostic audiometers, earmould kits and otoscopes) to our partner organisations are features of our work.

2. Specialist training, as integral parts of HARK! (Hearing Assessment and Research Centre) and EARCARE 2000 projects.

History
Over the last few years, Sound Seekers has supported work in Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Ethiopia, Fiji, Ghana, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malta, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, St. Lucia, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

One of the most significant developments of 1997 was the deployment of Sound Seekers' first HARK! (Hearing Assessment and Research Centre) mobile clinic to Uganda. Such is the success of this project, that in April 1999, Sound Seekers delivered its second HARK! vehicle to Africa. This time deaf children of the townships, informal settlements and isolated rural villages in the Western Cape of South Africa are benefiting from the unique HARK! Service. 2000 saw another HARK! in the Eastern Cape, early 2002 saw HARK! in Namibia, and a 5th HARK! is now planned for Lesotho by the end of 2002.
